King of Prussia–The Main Street Bridge over the Schuylkill River connecting Spring City Borough, Chester County and Royersford Borough, Montgomery County will reopen Friday afternoon (Aug. 26), the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation today announced.PennDOT will restore vehicular and pedestrian travel on the refurbished Main Street Bridge two weeks ahead of schedule following the construction of a new reinforced concrete deck. “We are pleased to reopen the Main Street Bridge ahead of schedule and restore travel between Spring City and Royersford for commuters, local businesses, school bus drivers and emergency service providers,” PennDOT District Executive Lester C. Toaso said.“Due to the bridge’s importance to the local communities, we committed to reopening the bridge as quickly as possible. Our contractor worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week to build the new bridge deck that will provide travelers with uninterrupted service for at least the next 25 years.”The structurally deficient bridge was closed to traffic on July 18, 2011 for the replacement of its deteriorated concrete deck and walls. The closure was scheduled to last eight weeks, but crews rebuilt the deck in just under six weeks. Construction will continue to repair the underside of the concrete arch bridge through the fall. When the work is completed, the Main Street Bridge will no longer be classified as structurally deficient.PennDOT began construction last January to rehabilitate and preserve the bridge’s structural integrity. The project originally included repairs to the bridge beams, walls and deck, and new paving, guiderail and pavement markings. The work was to be done using detours only during nights and weekends.However, PennDOT uncovered more severe structural damage, including holes in the bridge deck and deteriorated concrete in the support structure. This severe structural decay resulted in a revised plan that included the construction of a new, reinforced concrete deck and new concrete walls with pedestrian railings. The Main Street Bridge was built in 1922. The bridge is 346 feet long and 30 feet wide. The bridge carried 17,000 vehicles a day prior to its closure in July.J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Pa. was the general contractor on the $2.5 million project, which was financed with 100 percent state funds.

Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) will be restricted to one lane in each direction between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County from 9 p.m. Friday (July 22) to 6 a.m. Monday (July 25) for concrete pavement restoration by PECO Energy and Pennsylvania American Water Company, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said today.One travel lane will be maintained in each direction on the southbound side of Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) while the contractor pours new concrete patches on the northbound side of the highway. Motorists are advised to avoid the construction area or allow additional time for travel on Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) because backups and delays will occur.

King of Prussia – Route 422 motorists will face nighttime lane closures the next two weeks (June 19-30) when traveling between the Route 202 and Route 23 interchanges in Chester and Montgomery counties for pavement resurfacing, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said today. Route 422 will be reduced from two lanes to one at the First Avenue Interchange on Sunday through Friday (June 19-24) from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning. Crews will mill the road surface on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights and begin paving Wednesday. This operation is scheduled to continue until June 30. The contractor’s work schedule is weather dependent.Motorists are advised to allow additional time for travel on Route 422 during construction because backups may occur. PennDOT’s contractor will resurface 1,800 feet of Route 422 as part of the $2.7 million project that began in February 2011 to fill voids underneath the highway that could potentially develop into sinkholes. The project is scheduled to finish by the end of June. Crews have drilled 570 holes in the road and median of Route 422 and pumped grout to support the pavement and fill underground cavities. In addition to this compaction grouting operation, which covers a distance of 500 feet, the contractor replaced deteriorated concrete pavement and installed a liner in the grass median to seal the surface to block water penetration.

King of Prussia – Westbound Route 422 will be reduced from two lanes to one on Thursday and Friday nights (May 12-13) and throughout the day on Saturday (May 14) for the replacement of worn-out concrete pavement between the Pennsylvania Turnpike overpass and First Avenue Interchange in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced today. Route 422’s westbound right lane will be closed from 8 p.m. Thursday (May 12) to 5 a.m. Friday (May 13) while crews saw-cut the concrete pavement that is scheduled to be replaced. Route 422’s westbound right lane then will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday (May 13) to 6 p.m. Saturday (May 14) for the removal of the deteriorated concrete road surface, and the pouring and curing of the new concrete pavement. Construction will start Sunday night (Feb. 13) on a $2.7 million project to repair Route 422 and fill voids beneath the highway that could potentially develop into sinkholes between the First Avenue Interchange and the Pennsylvania Turnpike overpass in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County.Crews will work through late May to drill more than 425 holes in the road and median of Route 422 and pump grout to support the pavement and fill underground voids. In addition to this compaction grouting operation, which covers a distance of 500 feet, the contractor will replace a deteriorated concrete slab on the eastbound side of the highway; install a geosynthetic liner in the grass median to seal the surface to block water penetration; and resurface 1,800 feet of Route 422 between the First Avenue and Pennsylvania Turnpike overpasses. “Following our repair of several sinkholes on this part of Route 422 last October and our subsequent investigation into potential voids under the highway, we moved quickly to develop this compaction grouting project to stabilize and reinforce the earth beneath Route 422,” PennDOT District Executive Lester C. Toaso said. During the initial and latter stages of construction, Route 422 drivers will face lane closures Sundays through Thursdays from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. when traveling between the Route 202 and First Avenue interchanges. In between these stages, concrete barriers will be in place on Route 422 to establish protected work areas and keep two lanes of traffic open in each direction. Route 422 motorists are advised to expect slowdowns and delays, especially when lane closures are in effect during nighttime construction. This stretch of Route 422 carries 78,000 vehicles a day.Starting this coming week, eastbound and westbound Route 422 will be reduced from two lanes to one Sunday through Thursday (Feb. 13-17) from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. for the installation of concrete barriers adjacent to the grass median and for the removal of the asphalt riding surface atop the concrete pavement. The contractor’s schedule is dependent on the weather. During the week of Feb. 20, crews will work Sunday through Thursday (Feb. 20-24) from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. to reinforce the eastbound and westbound inside shoulders of Route 422 for vehicular use during the next phase of work. Route 422 will be reduced to one lane in both directions during this nighttime operation. In late February, PennDOT’s contractor will shift two lanes of eastbound and westbound Route 422 traffic to the inside shoulder and travel lane and set concrete barriers near the outside shoulders to establish protected areas for drilling and compaction grouting work. The next stages of construction will consist of:•Shifting two lanes of eastbound and westbound Route 422 traffic to the outside lane and shoulder and setting concrete barriers along the inside shoulders for drilling and compaction grouting; •Removing concrete barriers from the highway and working weeknights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. to drill and grout the center portions of eastbound and westbound Route 422; and •Paving eastbound and westbound Route 422 weeknights from 8 p.m.to 5 a.m., reducing traffic to one lane in one or both directions during construction. The bridge carries approximately 36,000 vehicles a day.Crews will reconstruct the five-span bridge one half at a time in order to keep two lanes open during construction. They will remove and replace the bridge’s concrete deck; repair steel floor beams and steel stringer beams that support the deck; paint structural steel; and repair concrete abutments at both ends of the bridge.Work on the Route 100 bridge is scheduled to finish by July 2012.The Route 100 bridge is 817 feet long and 63 feet wide. The bridge was originally built in 1954 and reconstructed in 1973. PennDOT is investing $6 million to rehabilitate and improve the Route 100 structure. Crews will drill during the day from the roadway shoulder to verify geophysical data that has been gathered and to collect soil and rock samples for testing. Construction Workers Improve 4.5 miles between Route 29 and Royersford Interchanges With Funding from American Recovery and Reinvestment ActKing of Prussia – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced that construction has been completed on the $13.2 million rehabilitation of the 4.5-mile long portion of Route 422 between the Route 29 and Royersford interchanges in Montgomery County. The project was financed with federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds. Construction crews worked since May 2009 to improve a deteriorated stretch of Route 422 by replacing aging and cracked concrete from the highway and repaving the concrete pavement with a new asphalt surface. The improvements also included the resurfacing of ramps at the Route 29 and Royersford interchanges; repairing 12 bridge structures; installing safety rumble strips; cleaning existing pipe culverts; and installing new guide rail, reflective pavement markers, and Intelligent Transportation System conduit.This improvement project covered Route 422 from a half-mile east of the Route 29 (Collegeville) Interchange to 1,500 feet west of the Royersford Interchange in Upper Providence and Limerick townships, respectively.Route 422 carries 62,000 vehicles a day between the Collegeville and Royersford exits. This part of the highway, which was built in the early 1970s, has four 12-foot wide travel lanes plus a 10-foot wide outside shoulder and an eight-foot wide inside shoulder.Road-Con, Inc. of West Chester, Pa. was the general contractor on the project. In the five-county Philadelphia region, PennDOT is investing $257.7 million of federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds on 30 transportation projects, which include road and bridge improvements, Intelligent Transportation System installations, traffic signal upgrades, multi-use trails, and curb ramp replacements.PennDOT has awarded all 30 transportation economic recovery projects in the five-county Philadelphia region and 29 projects have moved to construction. King of Prussia – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation today announced that the Ridge Pike Bridge over Sanatoga Creek in Lower Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County, will be closed and detoured from June 14, 2010 to August 31, 2010 as part of the $2.2 million project to rehabilitate the deteriorated structure. When the Ridge Pike span closes for about two months for major structural repairs, a posted detour will take motorists over Evergreen Road, Route 422 and Armand Hammer Boulevard. Local access will be maintained up to the bridge and access to business driveways near the bridge will be maintained. “While the majority of the construction is being done under traffic, we must close the bridge for most of the summer to safely rebuild major portions of the structure,” PennDOT District Executive Lester C. Toaso said. The contractor will face a $9,400 a day charge for each day the detour is in place after August 31. In addition to the upcoming bridge closure, the contractor will work weeknights from Tuesday (June 1) through Friday, June 11 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. to reconstruct a wingwall. One lane in each direction will remain open on Ridge Pike during this overnight operation. PennDOT began construction on April 19, 2010 to rehabilitate the two-span, structurally deficient stone-masonry arch bridge that was built in the mid-1800s and rehabilitated in 1914. The bridge is 50 feet long and 41 feet wide. It carries approximately 14,000 vehicles a day. The project is scheduled to finish in December 2010. The improvement project consists of replacing a deteriorated stone wingwall, which is an extension of a support abutment that serves as a retaining wall; removing the old pavement from the bridge and building a new concrete slab deck with an asphalt overlay; removing the deteriorated stone walls along the bridge and replacing them with concrete walls covered with stone veneers; and repairing the existing stone arches and remaining three stone wingwalls. The Crossing Construction Company, Inc. of Washington Crossing, Pa. is the general contractor on the $2,212,369 project that is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. In 2004, PennDOT performed emergency work on the Ridge Pike Bridge to repair a stone wall that was partially damaged. “Six years ago we attended to an immediate structural issue when part of the stone wall bulged out,” Toaso said. “Now, we’re undertaking a more comprehensive project to rebuild several parts of the bridge and address inherent causes of deterioration so they do not continue to occur.” PennDOT reminds motorists they can log on to 511pa.com or call 511 from any phone to check traffic conditions on major highways before heading out. PennDOT Announces Work Zone Awareness Week; Urges Motorists to be Cautious Year-Round As part of National Work Zone Awareness Week, which runs April 19 to April 23, PennDOT reminds motorists to be cautious in work zones year-round. “Last year, four highway workers and 19 motorists died in work-zone crashes in Pennsylvania – highlighting the sudden tragedy that can occur when motorists fail to slow down and stay alert for rapidly changing traffic conditions,” said PennDOT Secretary Allen D. Biehler, P.E. “The men and women who are dedicated to improving our roads and bridges should not have to risk life and limb simply because motorists are distracted or in a hurry.” According to PennDOT, work zone crashes and worker fatalities increased in 2009 from 2008. There were 1,513 crashes in which four workers and 19 motorists died last year, compared to 1,417 crashes and two fatalities in 2008. As part of National Work Zone Awareness Week, PennDOT’s traveling memorial will be on display in Harrisburg from Tuesday through Friday. The memorial consists of 78 posts topped by hard hats and draped in safety vests that represent each PennDOT employee who died in the line of duty since 1970. To reduce the risk of work zone crashes, motorists must follow the posted speed limit and pay close attention to signs and flaggers. If signs instruct you to do so, drivers are required to turn on their headlights. Finally, motorists should avoid tailgating and use four-way flashers when stopped or traveling slowly. “Although these tips may seem like common sense, highway workers continue to see speeding and distracted drivers passing through work zones, often just a few feet away,” Biehler said. Motorists caught driving 11 miles per hour, or more, above the posted speed limit in an active work zone, or who are involved in a crash in an active work zone and convicted for failing to drive at a safe speed, automatically lose their license for 15 days. Nearly 500 motorists had their license suspended for work zone violations last year. In addition, fines for certain traffic violations, including speeding and driving under the influence, are doubled when they occur in active work zones.

The project is scheduled to finish in December 2010.Crews will work the next eight months to rehabilitate the two-span, structurally deficient stone-masonry arch bridge that was built in the mid-1800s and rehabilitated in 1914. The bridge is 50 feet long and 41 feet wide. It carries approximately 14,000 vehicles a day. Motorists can expect to face traffic pattern shifts when driving on the bridge prior to June 13 and after August 31 as crews perform work on the structure. One travel lane will be maintained in each direction while crews work weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and some weekends from 6 p.m. Fridays to 6 a.m. Mondays.From June 13 to August 31, the Ridge Pike Bridge will be closed and detoured to allow the contractor to make major structural repairs. A posted detour will take motorists over Evergreen Road, Route 422 and Armand Hammer Boulevard during this time. Local access will be maintained up to the bridge and access to business driveways near the structure will be maintained during construction.“We have scheduled this project so it results in the least amount of disruption to local residents, business owners and commuters,” PennDOT District Executive Lester C. Toaso said. “While the majority of the work will be done under traffic, we must close the bridge for two months to safely rebuild major portions of the bridge.” Toaso said the contractor will face a $9,400 a day charge for each day the detour is in place after August 31. The improvement project consists of replacing a deteriorated stone wingwall, which is an extension of a support abutment that serves as a retaining wall; removing the old pavement from the bridge and building a new concrete slab deck with an asphalt overlay; removing the deteriorated stone walls along the bridge and replacing them with concrete walls covered with stone veneers; and repairing the existing stone arches and remaining three stone wingwalls.The Crossing Construction Company, Inc. of Washington Crossing, Pa. is the general contractor on the project that is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. In 2004, PennDOT performed emergency work on the Ridge Pike Bridge to repair a stone wall that was partially damaged. “Six years ago we attended to an immediate structural issue when part of the stone wall bulged out,” Toaso said. “Now, we’re undertaking a more comprehensive project to rebuild several parts of the bridge and address inherent causes of deterioration so they do not continue to occur.”PennDOT reminds motorists they can log on to 511pa.com or call 511 from any phone to check traffic conditions on major highways before heading out. Construction Continues to Improve Route 422 between Collegeville and Royersford in Montgomery County Crews to Set Concrete Barriers to Separate Eastbound Route 422 Lanes at Route 29 Interchange for Three Weeks King of Prussia – Construction on Route 422 in Montgomery County will continue through this summer as crews work to repair and resurface the four-lane highway between the Route 29 (Collegeville) and Royersford interchanges in Upper Providence and Limerick townships, Montgomery County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said today. Motorists traveling east on Route 422 face lane closures weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning, while westbound weekday traffic reduces to one lane from 7 p.m. to 2 p.m. the next afternoon. This Friday (March 26), crews will set concrete barriers in place on eastbound Route 422 at the Route 29 Interchange to establish a temporary traffic pattern for the repair of a backwall at the bridge over Route 29. For the next three weeks, Route 422’s eastbound right lane will be moved to the far right side of the highway for approximately 800 feet and a stop sign will be placed on the Route 29 ramp to control access onto eastbound Route 422. PennDOT began construction last May to rehabilitate and improve this deteriorated 4.5-mile long section of Route 422 under a $12.2 million federally-funded project, which is financed by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The project extends from 1,500 feet west of the Royersford Interchange to a half-mile east of the Route 29 (Collegeville) Interchange. Construction is scheduled to finish this summer. The improvement project consists of removing deteriorated concrete pavement; pouring new concrete patches; resurfacing the concrete pavement with asphalt; repairing 12 bridges; repairing ramps at the Route 29 and Royersford interchanges; installing safety rumble strips on roadway shoulders; cleaning existing pipe culverts; and installing new guide rail, reflective pavement markers, and Intelligent Transportation System conduit. Route 422 carries 62,000 vehicles a day between the Collegeville and Royersford exits. This part of the highway, which was built in the early 1970s, has four 12-foot wide travel lanes plus a 10-foot wide outside shoulder and an eight-foot wide inside shoulder. Road-Con, Inc. of West Chester, Pa. is the general contractor on the $12,217,790 project. In the five-county Philadelphia region, PennDOT is investing $257.7 million of federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds on 30 transportation projects, which include road and bridge improvements, Intelligent Transportation System installations, traffic signal upgrades, multi-use trails, and curb ramp replacements. PennDOT has awarded 29 transportation economic recovery projects in the five-county Philadelphia region and 25 projects have moved to construction. New Route 252 Bridge Opens Today in Tredyffrin Township Valley Forge Road Bridge completed ahead of schedule.

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA. (OCT. 26, 2009) — The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission announced the opening of the newly reconstructed Valley Forge Road Bridge (Route 252) today – weeks ahead of schedule. The bridge crosses the Turnpike at milepost 324.3, 1.6 miles west of the Valley Forge Interchange (Exit #326). Allan A. Myers, a Company of American Infrastructure, was awarded the $4.8 million contract to rebuild the bridge in January with the anticipated opening in mid-November. The new bridge features a stone architectural treatment and includes two 12-foot travel lanes and 8-foot shoulders. It will accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists who use the bridge to access Valley Forge National Park. The area adjacent to the bridge has been landscaped with two rain gardens. The Valley Forge Road Bridge (Route 252) project was the first of nine bridges targeted for replacement as part of the Turnpike’s total reconstruction and widening project. The six-mile Turnpike mainline (I-76) traverses Tredyffrin and Upper Merion Townships. HARRISBURG — Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-25) has appointed Sen. John C. Rafferty Jr., (R-44) to chair the Senate Transportation Committee. He replaces former Sen. Rob Wonderling, who resigned earlier this year. "I look forward to using this new position to help improve our transportation system, which is crucial to protecting public safety and also expanding our economy," Rafferty said. "Transportation issues affect every resident in Pennsylvania, whether it involves a daily commute to work or a bus ride on the public transit system or the movement of goods. Our goal is to have a modern, efficient system that meets the needs of its users." Lane Restrictions Scheduled On Route 29 For Cross Walk and ADA Ramp Installation

King of Prussia – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced lane restrictions are scheduled on Route 29 between Germantown Pike and Main Street in Collegeville Borough and Lower Providence Township, Montgomery County, on Monday through Friday (October 12-16) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for crosswalk and ADA ramp installation. The work is part of PennDOT’s project to realign and widen First Avenue (Route 29) at Main Street to accommodate longer turn lanes; widen Main Street between First Avenue (Route 29) and Second Avenue (Route 29) to add turn lanes; and widen Second Avenue (Route 29) at Main Street for additional turn lanes. The Route 29 and Main Street junction is currently two T-intersections that are offset by 500 feet. In addition, the lane configuration on the Perkiomen Bridge and at the intersection of Germantown Pike and Ridge Pike is being revised to allow for new turn lanes. Five traffic signals are also being replaced and interconnected along Route 29 to improve traffic flow and provide for better emergency responsiveness. In addition, streetscape amenities are being installed along Main Street at First Avenue (Route 29), including new street lights, trees, and decorative cross walks. Road-Con, Inc., of West Chester is the general contractor on the $3,538,747 project that is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. OAKS — U.S. sens. Robert Casey and Arlen Specter have announced funding made available for transportation projects in Pennsylvania. In this area, $1.3 million has been made available for improvements to the Route 422 off-ramp in Oaks. The reconstruction of the westbound off-ramp is aimed at mitigating traffic congestion on 422 and Egypt Road. Although no federal money is announced to help restore rail service between Philadelphia and Reading, a project Specter recently came out to support, the bill does include $3 million to provide commuter rail service from Scranton to New York City. Before the money is released, however, the bill in which it is included, must go through the conference process with the House of Representatives and signed into law by the president. Construction also continues to improve eastbound US 422 under $12 million Economic Recovery Project KING OF PRUSSIA, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation today announced that construction will start Monday (Aug. 10) to repair and resurface westbound Route 422 between the Route 29 (Collegeville) and Royersford interchanges in Upper Providence and Limerick townships, Montgomery County. This work is part of the $12.2 million economic recovery project that began on May 26 (2009). Crews will begin saw cutting areas of old concrete Monday (Aug. 10) and westbound Route 422 will be reduced from two lanes to one from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m., and then from 7 p.m. Monday to 2 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 11). After Monday, westbound Route 422 will be restricted to one lane weekdays from 7 p.m. to 2 p.m. the next afternoon for construction. All westbound lanes will reopen before the afternoon rush hours. Crews also will continue to replace deteriorated concrete and soon will begin resurfacing Route 422’s eastbound lanes between Royersford and Collegeville. Eastbound Route 422 is restricted to one lane weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning. PennDOT is rehabilitating and improving this deteriorated 4.5-mile section of Route 422 under a $12.2 million project that is financed by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The project extends from 1,500 feet west of the Royersford Interchange to a half-mile east of the Route 29 (Collegeville) Interchange in Limerick and Upper Providence townships, respectively. KING OF PRUSSIA, PA – Motorists traveling east on Route 422 in Montgomery County will continue to face a single-lane traffic pattern between the Royersford and Route 29 (Collegeville) interchanges as crews replace portions of the deteriorated concrete pavement, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) said today. Eastbound Route 422 will be reduced from two lanes to one Monday through Thursday (June 29-July 2) from 10 a.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning. Following the Independence Day holiday weekend, the eastbound lane closure will be in effect Monday, July 6 through Friday, July 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning. PennDOT advises Route 422 drivers to allow additional time for travel through the construction zone. PENNDOT TO START STIMULUS FUNDED 12.2 MILLION IMPROVEMENT OF ROUTE 422 IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will start construction Tuesday (May 26) to rehabilitate and improve a deteriorated 4.5-mile section of Route 422 in Montgomery County under a $12.2 million project that is financed by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). “This multi-million dollar improvement of Route 422 would not be starting this year if it were not for the federal economic stimulus funds,” PennDOT District Executive Lester C. Toaso said. “We are ready to upgrade this rough stretch of pavement and provide motorists with a smooth, structurally-sound roadway for many years to come.” Construction crews will rehabilitate Route 422 from a half-mile east of the Route 29 (Collegeville) Interchange to 1,500 feet west of the Royersford Interchange in Upper Providence and Limerick townships, respectively. The project is scheduled to finish in July 2010. Starting next week, crews will remove areas of deteriorated concrete pavement and pour new concrete patches on eastbound Route 422. They also will resurface the concrete pavement with asphalt; repair 12 bridges; repair ramps at the Route 29 and Royersford interchanges; install safety rumble strips on roadway shoulders; clean existing pipe culverts; and install new guide rail, reflective pavement markers, and Intelligent Transportation System conduit. Route 422 drivers will face lane closures weekdays, weeknights and some weekends over the next year. The contractor will stage the work so all lanes will be open on eastbound Route 422 during the peak morning commuting hours and all westbound lanes will be open during the peak late afternoon travel hours. Weekend ramps closures will occur at the Route 29 and Royersford interchanges for repairs and resurfacing. Starting Tuesday (May 26) and lasting about three months, eastbound Route 422 will be reduced from two lanes to one on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning for the removal and replacement of deteriorated concrete pavement. The contractor plans to start at the Royersford Interchange and proceed east. When the concrete replacement work shifts to Route 422’s westbound lanes in August or September, westbound motorists will encounter a signal-lane pattern weekdays from 7 p.m. to 2 p.m. the next afternoon. Route 422 carries 62,000 vehicles a day between the Collegeville and Royersford exits. This portion of the highway, which was built in the early 1970s, has four 12-foot wide travel lanes plus a 10-foot wide outside shoulder and an eight-foot wide inside shoulder. Road-Con, Inc. of West Chester, Pa. is the general contractor on the $12,217,790 project. Eight sub-contractors are part of the project team and will perform various operations, including paving, traffic control, line painting, concrete saw cutting, pipe cleaning, guide rail and fence installation; rumble strip installations; and seeding and erosion control. In the five-county Philadelphia region, PennDOT is investing $257.7 million of federal economic recovery money on 21 state and local transportation projects that will improve roads and bridges, install Intelligent Transportation System equipment, upgrade traffic signals, build a multi-use trail, and bring over 3,500 handicap curb ramps up to current design standards. PennDOT has opened construction bids for six projects in southeastern Pennsylvania that are financed with ARRA federal funds. Construction bid openings for the remaining 15 projects in the region will occur this month and in June, July and August. VALLEY FORGE NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK ADDS NEW FREE SHUTTLE SERVICE

As traffic congestion, pollution, and driver frustration continue to grow on roads all around Valley Forge National Historical Park, the park is trying out a new way to keep the park quiet, safe, and green. This summer, the park is experimenting with a free shuttle among the most popular destinations to give visitors an alternative to driving. Visitors will now be able to park their cars and step on board The Revolutionary Shuttle. The six-mile loop runs throughout most of the park, and riders can hop on or off at any of nine stops, including the Welcome Center and Washington’s Headquarters. The colorful shuttles, wrapped with images of Continental soldiers, will come along every 15 to 20 minutes, so visitors can take their time at any destination without worrying about meeting a schedule. Partially fueled by bio-diesel, the shuttles will reduce congestion, noise, and emissions in the heart of the park. This Memorial Day weekend (May 23, 24 & 25), shuttle service will be available for park visitors. Shuttle service will not be provided Tuesday, May 26 through Friday, May 29. Service will resume Saturday, May 30 and run seven days a week through August 30, 2009. This year’s shuttle service is an experiment. Park staff will be on hand to reach out to visitors to find out what they do and don’t like about the service, and will tweak it throughout the summer to find the best fit. “The Revolutionary Shuttle is a great new addition to the growing menu of visitor services at Valley Forge,” said park superintendent Mike Caldwell. “We’re experimenting with the service this summer, and if visitors are enthusiastic we’ll expand it next year.” The Revolutionary Shuttle is the latest in a variety of fun, convenient ways to see the park. The popular 90-minute guided Trolley Tour already is running. Trolley Tour riders hear the full story of the Valley Forge Encampment and enjoy the expertise of a professional guide on an open-air trolley, with extended guided stops at Washington’s Headquarters and Muhlenberg’s Brigade. Visitors also can walk, bike, or ride horses on some of the park’s 26 miles of trails. Bike rentals are available at the Lower Welcome Center parking lot. The shuttle is funded through National Park Service Alternative Transportation Funds, and a grant from the Ford Motor Company through the National Park Foundation. Greater Valley Forge Transportation is providing management services.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is advising motorists traveling I-76 between the Valley Forge (Exit #326) and Downingtown (Exit #312) Interchanges to be prepared for overnight lane closures, Sunday, May 17, westbound 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and eastbound 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., for construction work in the center lanes at milepost 324. The work is part of the Turnpike’s project to replace the Valley Forge Road Bridge (Route 252) that crosses over the Turnpike at milepost 324.3. The general contractor, Allan A. Myers, LLC, will continue work in this area until the new bridge is constructed and open to traffic in November. The contractor’s schedule is dependent on the weather and subject to change. Motorists are urged to stay alert for slow moving construction vehicles, stopped traffic, and lane closures. Posted speed limits will be enforced and fines doubled.Motorists are well advised to take extra care and not speed through road work sites. Under state law: Fines for driving violations in active work zones, marked by flashing lights, are doubled. Motorists traveling 11 mph or more over the posted speed limit can lose their driver's licenses for 15 days. Points assessed to motorists' driving records are doubled for work zone infractions. Some work zones have signs requiring motorists to turn on headlights.

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA – Overnight lane closures are scheduled over the next week on westbound Route 422 between Route 23 and Route 363 in Upper Merion and West Norriton townships, Montgomery County, for resurfacing, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced. Westbound Route 422 will be reduced from two lanes to one from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. during this operation, which also includes the resurfacing of two exit ramps. PA 29 and Ridge Pike Main St. Collegeville Traffic Pattern Changes

The S.R. 0029, Section 0L1 project located in Collegeville Borough and Lower Providence Township recently switched from Stage 2 traffic patterns to Stage 3 traffic patterns. As such, the lane configurations and traffic signal timings have recently been changed. The lanes on westbound Ridge Pike and westbound Germantown Pike have been reduced from two lanes to one lane. In conjunction, the travel lanes on the bridge carrying Ridge Pike over the Perkiomen Creek have been changed to one lane in the westbound direction (entering Collegeville Borough) and two lanes eastbound (exiting Collegeville Borough). Stage 3 construction will involve the placement of storm drainage, curbing and sidewalk on the south side of Ridge Pike between 2nd Avenue and the bridge and along 2nd Avenue from Ridge Pike to Chestnut Street. Stage 4 construction will involve the placement of concrete medians along 2nd Avenue from Ridge Pike to Chestnut Street, the installation of the final traffic signal equipment, the installation of landscaping items, and the placement of final paving, paint markings and signing. KING OF PRUSSIA - The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission will close Route 252 (Valley Forge Road) between Adams Drive and Yellow Springs Road in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County, beginning Monday, March 2, for the replacement of the Route 252 Bridge over the Turnpike, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced. During construction, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission will detour Route 252 (Valley Forge Road) through traffic over Route 202, Route 422, and Route 23 (Port Kennedy Road). Local access will be maintained up the construction zone. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the area. BRIDGE BEAM DELIVERIES TO RESULT IN POSSIBLE TRAFFIC SLOWDOWNS IN PHOENIXVILLE

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA – Traffic slowdowns may occur in Phoenixville Borough, Chester County, during the next few weeks for the delivery of large steel beams for the new Gay Street/Route 113 Bridge that is under construction, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation today announced. Motorists can expect to face slower than normal travel speeds when large flat-bed trucks move through Phoenixville to deliver steel beams to the construction staging area. Weather permitting, three trucks are scheduled to enter the borough on Wednesday and Thursday (Jan. 28-29) between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Each truck will carry a 140-foot long steel beam. On Friday (Jan. 30), six trucks will deliver six 80-foot long steel beams to the bridge site between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The trucks will depart from Lancaster and arrive in the borough on westbound Route 23, then turn right onto Main Street and follow Main Street to the construction area. Restrictions also will be in place on Vanderslice Street between Main Street and Franklin Street. Next week, PennDOT said 14 trucks are scheduled to arrive in Phoenixville on Monday through Thursday (Feb. 2-5) to deliver seven 120-foot long steel beams and seven 80-foot long steel beams. These trucks will enter the borough on Route 113. PennDOT said the $17.5 million dollar project to build the new nine-span Gay Street/Route 113 Bridge is running on schedule. Crews have built the sub-structure support system that consists of eight new reinforced concrete piers and two reinforced concrete abutments, and they will set the new steel beams in place shortly after delivery. The new bridge is scheduled to open in early 2010. PennDOT began construction last April to remove and replace the 84-year-old Gay Street/Route 113 Bridge that spanned French Creek, several local streets, railroad tracks and the former Phoenix Steel site. The new Gay Street/Route 113 Bridge will span 972 feet from end-to-end. The bridge’s concrete deck will be supported by steel beams on the three southern and two northern approach spans, and by steel arches on the four central spans Construction crews are building the new bridge on the same alignment as the existing structure. The new bridge will have two 12-foot wide travel lanes; two 6-foot wide shoulders; two 6-foot wide sidewalks; and ornamental street lights. Nyleve Bridge Corporation of Emmaus, Pa. is the general contractor on the $17,537,681 project. The project is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. Approximately 6,700 vehicles a day traveled over the Gay Street Bridge prior to its closure.

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced that westbound Route 422 will be reduced from two lanes to one lane between Route 23 and Route 363 in Upper Merion and West Norriton townships, Montgomery County, on Friday (Jan. 23) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to restripe the pavement and open a third westbound lane between the two interchanges. Motorists are advised to allow additional time to travel west on Route 422 while crews remove existing pavement lines and paint new lines to establish the new three-lane pattern on westbound Route 422 between Route 23 and Route 363. PennDOT District Executive Lester C. Toaso said the pavement striping operation is scheduled for Friday because no rain or snow is in the forecast and the daytime temperature is predicted to be above 40 degrees. Upon completing the line painting operation, PennDOT will open the third westbound lane on this part of Route 422 as part of its $5.5 million project to reduce congestion on the westbound side of the highway during the weekday evening rush hour. Glasgow, Inc. of Glenside, Pa. is the general contractor on the $5,514,984 contract that is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.

The US 422 River Crossing Complex Interim Project is in the final stages of completion; however, the last operation to remove existing traffic lines and paint final lane stripes on westbound US 422 has not been completed due to cold weather conditions. The lane striping is required to open the additional third westbound lane on US 422 between Route 23 and Route 363 (Trooper Road), and the additional exit lane at Route 363 (Trooper Road). PennDOT said the line painting requires ambient air temperatures of at least 40 degrees. The striping will be completed when the temperature meets an acceptable level. We appreciate your patience during this process as we work to improve US 422.

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced that early Wednesday morning (Dec. 10) it will open the newly built spur ramp to take Route 422 West drivers to Route 23 West in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County. The new spur was built off the existing Route 422 West ramp to Route 23 East. Weather permitting, PennDOT said its contractor will open the new spur ramp Wednesday (Dec. 10) before 6 a.m. Crews will work from 9 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 9) to 6 a.m. Wednesday (Dec. 10) to prepare to open the spur and motorists may face a lane closure on westbound Route 422 during this operation. Starting Wednesday, westbound Route 422 motorists destined for Route 23 West will use this exit ramp and spur to reach a signalized intersection at Route 23, where they will turn left to proceed west on Route 23. In conjunction with opening the new ramp spur, PennDOT will close and remove the existing loop ramp from Route 422 West to Route 23 West. The opening of the spur ramp along westbound Route 422 is part of PennDOT’s $5.5 million project to reduce onerous congestion on westbound Route 422 during weekday evening rush hours by adding the third westbound lane between the Route 23 and Route 363 interchanges. PennDOT expects to open the new third lane on westbound Route 422 within the next week. Construction began last February and will finish in late December. KING OF PRUSSIA, PA - Overnight lane closures are scheduled next week (Sept. 22-24) on Route 422 between First Avenue and Route 363 in Upper Merion and West Norriton townships, Montgomery County, for a traffic pattern change, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) said today. The contractor's work schedule is: - From 10 p.m. Monday (Sept. 22) to 5 a.m. Tuesday (Sept. 23), Route 422's eastbound and westbound left lanes will be closed. - From 10 p.m. Tues (Sept. 23) to 5 a.m. Wednesday (Sept. 24), Route 422's westbound left lane will be closed. - From 10 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 24) to 5 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 25), Route 422's westbound right lane will be closed. Crews will work next week to relocate concrete barriers, paint traffic lines and pave part of the highway to shift two lanes of westbound traffic toward the center of the highway. Motorists are advised to allow extra time for travel on Route 422 during construction. This operation is part of PennDOT's $5.5 million project to reduce congestion on westbound Route 422 during weekday evening rush hours by adding a third westbound lane between the Route 23 and Route 363 interchanges. REFLECTIVE PAVEMENT MARKER INSTALLATION NEXT WEEK ON ROUTE 422 IN MONTCO AND ROUTE 309 IN BUCKS COUNTY09/11/2008-KING OF PRUSSIA: New reflective pavement markers will be installed next week on Route 422 in Montgomery County and Route 309 in Bucks County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced. The work is part of a $421,347 project to install reflective pavement markers on several state highways and ramps in the region. Installation will begin 10 p.m. Monday (September 15). Work will be done during the overnight hours. The work crew will occupy one lane to conduct a slow-moving operation. Motorists are advised to be alert of this moving operation and to expect possible slowdowns when driving near the work crews. The operation is dependent on the weather. The work schedule for next week is:Monday through Wednesday (September 15-17) from 10:00 p.m. to 5 a.m. Westbound Route 422 between the Route 363 (Trooper Rd.) and Sanatoga exits, in Lower Providence, Upper Providence and Limerick townships, Montgomery County.Thursday (September 18) from 9:00 p.m. to 5 a.m.. Route 309 (both directions) in Hilltown and West Rockhill townships, Bucks County. On future dates over the next twelve months, the pavement markers will be installed on Interstate 95 and on Route 1 in lower Bucks County; on I-95, I-476 and routes 1 and 322 in Delaware County; and on I-95 in Philadelphia in the vicinity of Philadelphia International Airport. PennDOT is installing the markers to improve visibility and safety for drivers at night and in bad weather such as rain or fog. They are installed along center lines, edge lines and ramps. The markers more clearly define travel lanes and ramps, helping to prevent lane crossover. The devices supplement the reflective paint that is already used to designate highway lanes. Similar markers have been installed on many highways throughout Pennsylvania. It only takes a minute or less to install each marker, so it is possible to install about 66 markers per hour depending on the location. Each marker has a cast iron housing with a plastic reflector in the center. The devices measure 10 inches long by 5 ½ inches wide, and weigh about 5 ½ pounds each. Yellow reflectors are used for center lines, white reflectors are used for edge lines and two-color (red and white) reflectors are for exit and entrance ramps. The reflector is recessed below the surface of the housing and is designed to be snowplowable. Earlier this year, crews installed the markers on Routes 30, 401, 113, 202 and 252 in Chester County, Route 3 and Route 30 in Delaware County and I-76 and Route 23 in Montgomery County. D.W. Miller, Inc. of Huntingdon, Pa. is the contractor on the $421,347 project. The project is financed with federal and state funds.
