Projects Projects

Replacement of the Old Betzwood Bridge:

Plans are being developed to construct a new bicycle/pedestrian bridge over the Schuylkill River to link the regional trail systems of Montgomery and Chester Counties, the Valley Forge National Historical Park (VFNHP), and Upper Merion Township. These new connections will improve recreational opportunities, expand bicycle commuter options, improve access for Park visitors, reduce auto dependency, and promote green travel patterns.

In addition to the bicycle/pedestrian trail bridge, this project will also replace the Trooper Rd. bridge over the Schuylkill River Trail and the superstructure on the bridge over the Norfolk Southern railroad, as well as upgrade roadway and trail approaches to each of the bridges.

US 422 River Crossing Project

  • PA 363/US 422 Interchange Remedies:
A new on ramp from PA 363 (Trooper Road) to US 422 westbound and an off ramp from US 422 eastbound to PA 363 (Trooper Road) will improve access and help relieve serious congestion in this area. Currently there is no 422 westbound on ramp or 422 eastbound off ramp at Trooper Road. The project is in the final design stage and is anticipated to be under construction in 2012.

  • PA 23 and US 422 Interchange Remedies:
This phase of the project will involve constructing a new off ramp from US 422 eastbound to PA 23. Along with the new off ramp, North Gulph Road will be relocated and widened. A landscaped buffer zone alongside the relocation will reduce the noise and visual impacts of traffic into Valley Forge National Historic Park. The “gateway” to the park will be enhanced with this project.  An anticipated construction date is unavailable at this time and will be set once funding is determined.

Replacement of the US 422 Schuylkill River Bridge:

This project will replace the US 422 Schuylkill River Crossing. This project provides for the construction of a new US 422 bridge structure over the Schuylkill River for westbound traffic, replacement of the existing US 422 structure over the Schuylkill River for eastbound traffic; replacement of the US 422 structure over Indian Lane; replacement of the US 422 structure over the Schuylkill River Trail; replacement of the PA 23 structure over US 422, and construction of a new flyover ramp from US 422 eastbound to PA 23.

This project is part of the "River Crossing Complex," which is a complex area of roadways, interchanges, intersections, and bridges in and around the Valley Forge National Historic Park. Environmental clearance for various components has been undertaken and individual projects have been broken out for ease of construction coordination.

An early action interim project to provide timely and effective relief to westbound afternoon congestion until the long range projects can fully advance was completed in 2009.  The project included an additional lane westbound and some minor reconfiguration of the on and off ramps at Valley Forge Road.

Pottstown ByPass:

The Pottstown Bypass Improvement Project will modernize and improve operations and traffic flow on US 422 from Sanatoga into Berks County.  The project has been broken into three sections, each with a subsection which will be an individual project.  The descriptions and limits of each section and subsection are listed below, along with the anticipated schedule.

Route 724 Interchange to Sanatoga Interchange (Section M01):
  • Section M1A: Route 724 Interchange to Porter Road (Opens in a new window)
    • Section M1A will replace the three bridges carrying US 422 over the Schuylkill River and Norfolk Southern Railroad, reconfigure the Armand Hammer Boulevard Interchange by constructing new ramps and removing the existing ramps.  The project is anticipated to begin construction in 2011.

  • Section M1B: Porter Road to Sanatoga Interchange  (Opens in a new window)
    • Section M1B includes the replacement of the Sanatoga Creek/Road bridge, replacement of the Sprogles Run culvert and replacement of the Porter Road bridge.  1.72 miles of US 422 will be reconstructed as part of this project.  An anticipated construction date is unavailable at this time and will be set once funding is determined.
Berks County line to west of Keim Street Interchange (SectionM02):
  • Section M2B: East of Schuylkill River Bridge # 1 to west of Keim Street Interchange (Opens in new window)
    • Section M2B includes the replacement of three bridges carrying US 422 over Laurelwood Road, PA 100 and Hanover Street.  The project will reconstruct 2.4 miles of US 422 and improve acceleration and deceleration lanes at PA 100 to meet modern design standards.  An anticipated construction date is unavailable at this time and will be set once funding is determined.
  • Section M2C: Berks County Line to west of Schuylkill River Bridge # 1 (Opens in new window)
    • Section M2C includes the realignment of the Stowe s-curve to address safety issues and the reconfiguration of the Stowe interchange.  The project will replace the water treatment plan access culvert and reconstruct 1.3 miles of US 422.  An anticipated construction date is unavailable at this time and will be set once funding is determined.
West of Keim Street Interchange to Route 724 Interchange (Section M03):
  • Section M03: West of Keim Street Interchange to Route 724 Interchange (Opens in new window)
    • Section M03 includes the replacement of the bridge carrying Keim Street over US 422 and the replacement of the bridge carrying US 422 over the PA 724 interchange.  The acceleration and deceleration lanes at the Keim Street interchange and the PA 724 interchange will be improved to meet modern design standards.  One mile of US 422 will be reconstructed as part of this project.  An anticipated construction date is unavailable at this time and will be set once funding is determined.
